What is the quality of a perfume? It includes the scent, the ingredients used, longevity, and projection. What is projection, and what significance does it have for the end customer?

 

The quality of a perfume encompasses several aspects. Firstly, there’s the scent itself. It’s important whether the fragrance is pleasant, deep, and whether the different notes—top, heart, and base—develop in a way that positively surprises the wearer at each stage. The longevity of a perfume is equally significant, as it determines how long the fragrance will last on the skin. Lastly, there’s projection, which refers to how far the scent radiates from the wearer.

 

About perfume projection

 

Sometimes, when a person enters a room, you can immediately smell them, or even when they pass by you in a shopping mall, their scent lingers. We say that these perfumes have a long “sillage” or “trail.” On the other hand, some perfumes are only noticeable when you’re close to the person wearing them. In this case, the projection is considered low.

 

Whether a perfume’s projection is high or low depends on the specific nature of the fragrance. Some notes are more volatile, leading to a wider spatial development. Less volatile accords stay close to the skin, which can (but does not necessarily) affect the final longevity of the scent.

Closer or further projection?

 

It seems that many people associate good quality with strong projection. It’s important to keep this in mind when creating a perfume brand. However, it’s also worth realizing that this isn’t always straightforward.

 

Many in the perfumery industry believe that perfumes are like whispers and should only be noticeable up close. On the other hand, market practices of major brands suggest that a louder scent is in vogue. Of course, it’s crucial not to overdo it—perfumes shouldn’t be overwhelming.
